Description
Aerodynamics arrived late to gravel. When ENVE launched its first gravel-specific wheel line in 2018, the priorities were compliance, durability, and pinch-flat resistance. The G SES 4.5 reflects how thoroughly the discipline has evolved since then. Built on the same dissimilar-depth rim philosophy that underpins ENVE's Tour de France-winning SES road wheels, the G SES 4.5 front wheel applies that aerodynamic framework to gravel tire widths between 44 and 52mm, where the aero opportunity at racing speeds has largely gone untapped.
The front rim sits at 49mm deep with a 30mm internal width and 3.8mm sidewalls. That internal measurement is 5mm wider than the road SES 4.5 and sized to maintain clean airflow at the tire's trailing edge when running the larger-volume rubber that gravel demands. The shallower 49mm front profile works in tandem with the deeper 55mm rear wheel as part of ENVE's dissimilar-depth system. The front position on the bike is directly exposed to crosswind, so ENVE uses the reduced depth to keep handling stable and predictable when wind direction shifts mid-course. As tire widths increase, rim width has to follow to preserve the aerodynamic relationship between tire profile and rim sidewall. ENVE shaped the G SES 4.5 front rim to smooth that transition across 44-52mm tires, the range where competitive gravel riders actually spend their time.
The rim uses ENVE's Wide Hookless Bead technology, borrowed from their mountain bike line, which creates a wider, blunt leading edge at the bead seat. On a gravel course where hidden rocks and ruts arrive without warning, that wider edge dissipates impact energy across a larger area and reduces the likelihood of pinch-flatting a tubeless tire. Carbon rims are manufactured in ENVE's facility in Ogden, Utah, where design, R&D, testing, layup, and assembly all happen under one roof.... Read More
