Description

Gravel racing's aerodynamic arms race now runs on the same engineering that proved itself at the Tour de France. ENVE's G SES 4.5 Pro front wheel extends the dissimilar-depth SES philosophy into the gravel discipline, pairing a 49mm-deep carbon rim with a 30mm internal width designed to optimize airflow around tires between 44 and 52mm. Where the standard G SES 4.5 established the aero gravel category, the Pro version applies the same weight-reduction playbook ENVE developed for its World Tour road wheels: a lighter carbon laminate, the Innerdrive Pro hubset, and ceramic bearings that reduce drag under sustained effort.

The front rim's 49mm depth is purpose-shaped for crosswind stability, which matters more on gravel than on the road. Exposed ridgelines, open ranch roads, and agricultural flats all deliver unpredictable gusts that deeper front profiles can amplify into twitchy handling. ENVE's front-specific rim shape manages that airflow to keep steering inputs predictable, while the deeper 55mm rear rim on the companion rear wheel recovers the aero advantage behind the rider where crosswind sensitivity is less consequential. That asymmetric approach is central to the SES design language and one of the reasons ENVE keeps front and rear rims distinct rather than splitting the difference with a single depth.

The Innerdrive Pro hubset is where the Pro designation earns its weight savings over the standard G SES 4.5. The front hub weighs 87 grams and uses ENVE's Pro Ceramic Bearings, which feature grade 5 ceramic balls paired with hardened stainless-steel races that resist corrosion. A non-contact seal on the inboard bearing face reduces rotational drag, while a semi-contact seal on the outboard side keeps debris out. The 40-tooth ratchet engagement system uses a light-action spring calibrated for minimal drag while maintaining the engagement response demanded by competitive gravel riders. These are the same hub internals raced at the World Tour level.... Read More
