Description

Garmin put a speaker in the Edge 1050 back in 2024. The Edge 1060 adds the other half of that conversation. A microphone now sits in the case alongside the speaker, so the unit takes spoken commands during a ride — say the wake phrase, then ask what your heart rate is, ask for a route to the nearest restroom, or report a pothole, all without taking a hand off the bars. Garmin is upfront that voice control is available in select languages and that recognition varies with riding conditions, which is a polite way of saying a fast descent into a headwind is not where you want to test it. Messaging runs through the Garmin Messenger app on a paired phone, and incoming messages get read aloud through the speaker so you are not pulling a phone out at a stoplight.

The display carries over from the 1050 unchanged: 3.5" diagonal, 480 x 800 pixels, touch-operated. What is new is a set of side buttons, which Garmin added for gloved hands and wet weather, conditions where a touchscreen gets unreliable no matter whose it is. The case also came down in size. The 1060 measures 58.5 x 107 x 16.3mm and weighs 142 grams, against 161 grams and 118.5mm of length on the 1050. The 11.5mm of case length is the part you will actually notice. On a road bike running a short stem, case length determines whether the computer tucks in behind the bar on an out-front mount or hangs out past it. An IPX7 rating covers rain and road spray.

Battery is the one place nothing moved. The Edge 1060 is rated for up to 20 hours in demanding use with navigation running and sensors paired, and up to 60 hours in battery saver mode, which are the same numbers Garmin gave the 1050. For most riders that covers a week of training or a long day with room to spare, but if you are riding 24-hour events or unsupported multi-day routes, the Edge 1040 Solar is still the unit in the range built for that, at up to 45 hours. New here is reverse charging, which lets the 1060 send power to a Varia light, a phone or another device. Read the fine print before you count on it: it needs a compatible USB-C cable and Garmin states it is not intended to charge while you ride.... Read More
