Description
Rear-facing radar on a bicycle sounds like overkill until the first time a car surprises you from behind at 50 miles per hour. The Garmin Varia RearVue 820 addresses that vulnerability with radar technology that detects approaching vehicles up to 175 meters away and pushes alerts to your bike computer, smartwatch, or the Varia smartphone app. The detection range matters less than how the system communicates what it sees, and the RearVue 820 introduces vehicle size classification that distinguishes between motorcycles, cars, and trucks on your display. Threat level categorization adds context by indicating whether an approaching vehicle is closing fast or changing lanes, giving you more information to work with than simple proximity dots. That extra context helps you decide whether to hold your line or move right, rather than just knowing something is back there.
The radar operates with a 60-degree beam width that picks up vehicles several lanes away, which proves useful on multilane roads where cars may be moving laterally as they approach. Same-speed tracking maintains awareness of vehicles following at your pace or waiting to pass, a scenario that previous radar generations would drop from the display once the closing speed equalized. You no longer lose track of a car that matches your speed while waiting for a safe moment to overtake. Pairing works through ANT+ for basic radar functionality across most cycling computers from Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, and others, while Bluetooth connectivity with newer Garmin Edge models unlocks the advanced vehicle sizing and lane change features.
Visibility runs both directions with this unit. The tail light reaches 100 lumens in day flash mode, making the RearVue 820 visible to drivers from up to 2 kilometers away. A brake light function detects when you slow or stop and shifts to a distinct flash pattern that signals deceleration to traffic behind you. Four standard light modes cover different riding contexts: day flash for maximum visibility in sunlight, night flash for after-dark rides, solid for steady illumination, and peloton mode that reduces intensity to preserve the night vision of riders drafting behind you. Custom patterns configured through the Varia app let you dial in specific brightness levels and flash durations for your typical conditions. Night flash outputs 40 lumens while solid mode runs at 25, and peloton drops to 8 lumens to avoid blinding your group ride companions.... Read More
