Description

Twelve-speed drivetrains have fragmented into multiple ecosystems, each with specific chain requirements. KMC's X12 works across Shimano 12-speed, SRAM Eagle, SRAM Eagle AXS, and Campagnolo 12-speed systems, covering the majority of current road, gravel, and mountain drivetrains with a single chain option. The important exception: SRAM's flat-top chains used in eTAP road groups and Transmission/T-Type systems require KMC's separate XFLAT line. If you're running Eagle on a mountain or gravel bike, or Shimano or Campagnolo 12-speed on any platform, the X12 is the compatible choice.

The narrower plate spacing required for 12-speed cassettes demands tighter manufacturing tolerances than wider chains. KMC's X12 maintains these tolerances while using their Double X-Bridge plate geometry to create the engagement ramps that guide the chain onto cassette cogs and chainring teeth. The chamfered inner and outer plate edges smooth transitions between gears, and the bridge shape between rivets increases lateral stiffness for faster response to derailleur movement. The result is shifting performance that matches or exceeds OEM chains from the drivetrain manufacturers themselves.

Construction uses solid pins secured with mushroom riveting, which flares the pin ends to lock them into the outer plates. This connection method handles the higher loads that come with 12-speed drivetrains, where the smaller cogs and narrower spacing concentrate forces differently than wider-ratio cassettes. KMC rates their pin connection for reliable shifting under load, which matters for riders who shift during climbs or accelerations rather than soft-pedaling through gear changes.... Read More
