Description
LOOK built their reputation on road pedals, but the X-Track is where that engineering crosses into the dirt. The platform takes the same approach LOOK has refined over decades — a clean mechanical interface, predictable engagement, and a body shape that sheds mud rather than packing it — and applies it to a two-bolt mountain pedal that works for cross-country racing, gravel, cyclocross, and trail riding. The X-Track sits as the entry point into LOOK's mountain pedal range, with a steel axle and composite body that keeps the price accessible without giving up the engagement quality that defines the more expensive X-Track Race and X-Track Carbon models above it.
The cleat interface is LOOK's own design and shares nothing with Shimano SPD despite the visually similar two-bolt pattern on the shoe side. Engagement is bi-directional — the pedal works identically on either face, so there's no hunting for the right side when you're clipping in mid-climb or after a dab. Spring tension adjusts via a single hex bolt at the rear of the pedal body, with a tension scale molded into the housing so you can match left and right by eye. The X-Track ships with grey cleats that provide 13 degrees of total angular float and 2.5mm of lateral float, which is the standard mountain cleat LOOK includes across the range.
Mud clearance was a priority in the body shape. The open architecture lets debris drop through rather than compacting around the spring mechanism, which matters in cyclocross conditions and on wet trail rides where Shimano-style pedals can get sticky. The composite body keeps weight reasonable for a steel-axle pedal and absorbs scuffs from rock strikes better than aluminum at this price point. Bearings ride on a chromoly axle with a dual sealed cartridge and bushing system, and the pedals are user-serviceable when the time comes — LOOK sells rebuild kits through the Excel Service Course rather than treating the pedals as disposable....
