Pinarello GAN RS Ultegra 6870 Di2 Bicycle 2016

Here at Excel Sports we enjoy putting together special complete bike builds and offering packages at pricing that is almost impossible to duplicate on your own. With this lovely 2016 Pinarello GAN RS frame we decided dress it up with an Ultegra 6800/6870 Di2 Groupset. The PRO Vibe alloy stem and carbon handlebar have Di2 integrated wiring, and we took advantage of the E-Tube wiring to use the EW-RS910 Bar Plug junction for a super clean and convenient set-up. The 41mm deep 2016 Reynolds Assault SLG Carbon Wheelset is a perfect complement to the race dreams of the aero GAN RS design. Go ahead, just re-read that paragraph and look at our price on this complete bike. We dare you.

With the GAN RS you get the proven asymmetric frame construction, the advanced Bolide-inspired Onda fork and Onda seatstays, and the sleek aero seatpost concept. Pinarello does offer the GAN RS in fewer sizes, but with ten to chose from, you won't be lacking for options. The headtube of the GAN RS is about 5mm taller per comparable size than the F8, creating a more reasonable fit starting point than the pure race F8. The carbon fiber used is Toray's T900 series, which just a few years ago was top of the line, and now with the T1100 employed in the F8, the T900 is just a step back. For comparison, the GAN S is made with the T700 series carbon. So the GAN RS is perfectly placed in the line, and still exceeds the overall carbon quality and performance of many competitor's pro-level bikes. Rider comfort comes from the frame construction and lay-up, with the top tube shape and seatstays delivering a smooth ride quality and minor bump compliance.

On the F8, Pinarello is able to employ the T1100 carbon to the greatest effect, so the frame is the lightest of the line-up, as well as being the stiffest laterally for amazing acceleration and power transfer. The GAN RS is a touch heavier due to the different grade material and it's adaptation for the asymmetric design. Pinarello has developed this concept to counter single-side drivetrain forces on frame performance. Starting with the Onda fork, all the way through the rear dropout, the entire left side of the frameset has additional structural construction to balance the forces. It leads to a special feeling when descending, where the counterbalancing forces of the bike lead to a very consistent stiffness side to side. On acceleration, or under a burst of power, the bike moves smoothly forward- incredibly deceptively so. Those cyclists expecting a "snappy" response will not get it. No power is wasted with frame flex from the down stroke of the driveside arm, the energy goes directly through the drivetrain. Don't be fooled, the acceleration is sharp and impressive, but as smooth as it gets.

Though this Ultegra-equipped complete bike features the Di2 electronic E-Tube drivetrain, Pinarello's Think2 internal cable routing and stop system can also be used with mechanical systems as well. The Italian company has also been party to a movement back to threaded bottom bracket systems, with an Italian threaded BB shell. You still get an oversized bottom bracket junction that manages power and control at the bottom connection of both front and rear triangles, but the simplicity and creak-free threaded system has been very well received. The matte black and gloss red finish and scheme are pure Pinarello, so acolytes will embrace the graphic design.

The groupset is all 11-speed 6800/6870. Your crank is a 172.5mm with a 50-34 combination, all spinning on an external Italian threaded bottom bracket. Matched with the 11-28 cassette you have great range and the super impressive shifting with the integrated design of the Shimano chain with the Di2 6870 front and rear derailleurs. The 6800 brakeset is widely considered the second best brakeset in the world, behind it's Dura-Ace breathren.

The 42cm wide PRO Vibe Carbon Di2 Handlebar is stiff, light, and has full Di2 integration, as does the 110mm Pro Vibe Alloy Stem. The front of the cockpit is finished with red Arundel handlebar tape. The GAN RS frameset includes the specific aero carbon offset seatpost and we have topped it with the 142mm wide PRO Falcon Ti saddle to round out the cockpit in style.

The 41 profile 2016 Reynolds Assault SLG is fast and responsive, with a modern 25mm external width that integrates perfectly with 23-28mm tires for sure handling, improved aerodynamics and straight out speed. Panaracer Race A EVO3 Tires in the 700x25mm size deliver wonderful grip and feel, with low rolling resistance and puncture protection you don't expect in a 230 gram race-level clincher tire.

Experience high-level performance and incredible ride quality as defined by Pinarello, Shimano and Excel Sports. If you haven't ridden a higher-grade asymmetric design Pinarello frame, you have been missing out. It may even feel strange at first, under power, or when descending or cornering at speed, but once you realize the balance and control the system provides, it becomes natural, and going back to a bike with less engineering feels odd. Add in the efficiency and ease of the Ultegra 6870 Di2 system and you have a race level bike you can ride for pure enjoyment over days. Enjoy the smooth, powerful acceleration, stability, feel and componentry that are just a tier below the Team Sky level, but save thousands of dollars and share thousands of smiles with this Excel built GAN RS Ultegra 6870 Di2 Bicycle.
