Pearl Izumi Pro Tall Sock
Pearl Izumi's sponsored pro cyclists can be a picky bunch. Their socks need to be tall, yet stay up. The socks need to be comfortable and have a little loft, but be lightweight and thin. The socks ned to breathe and wick away moisture quickly and effectively at all times. Last, the movement towards compression support means the socks have a perfect level of graduated compression that improves blood flow, fits great and helps the sock stay up. Many of us likely view socks in those ways to some extent, but we don't really think about it. The Pro Tall Sock checks all the boxes and for the non-pro market adds some distinctive styling and contrasting colors.
The heart of the sock is Pearl's P.R.O. Transfer yarn, which has a wonderfully soft hand, yet wicks away moisture and offers antimicrobial properties. Pearl isn't giving up the overall material percentages, but to achieve the compression level of the Pro Tall Sock, we'd guess it varies, along with the actual fabric construction, from 30-40%. Flat toe seam construction provides superior comfort over toes, and you can see the application of the yarn and fabric structures change as you move up the sock. You get arch compression, mesh over the top, a cleanly made thin, shaped heel, then a transition to a set of wider channel structures that act to deliver the compression with comfort over the Achilles tendon and muscles of the lower calf. The channels also allow oncoming air to infiltrate and escape quickly so you won't overheat. On top of all that, the tall cuff is comfortable and stays in place, yet never feels restrictive.
