Most chain cleaning devices have a fundamental flaw: the dirty solvent you're trying to remove ends up recirculating through the same reservoir, redepositing grime onto the chain you just cleaned. Muc-Off designed the X3 with a dual-reservoir system that separates clean degreaser from contaminated runoff. Fresh cleaner feeds from the top reservoir through a push-button release, while the dirty fluid drains into a lower collection chamber where it can't contact the chain again.

The cleaning mechanism uses rotating brush wheels and abrasive cleaning teeth that create 120 contact points across each chain link. As you backpedal through the device, the brushes work into the gaps between inner and outer plates, around rollers, and into the spaces that hand-brushing typically misses. The result is a deeper clean than you'd get from spray-and-wipe methods, with significantly less time and effort than disassembling the chain for an ultrasonic bath.

The kit includes a 75ml bottle of Muc-Off Bio Drivetrain Cleaner, which can either be poured directly into the X3's reservoir or sprayed onto the cassette and chainrings before running the chain through the device. The formula is biodegradable and safe for metal, plastic, rubber, and seals — it cuts through old chain lube and accumulated road grime without damaging drivetrain components.
