Description
Garage floor space disappears fast when you own more than one bike, and the simplest fix is getting them off the ground. Park Tool's 451-2 Storage Hook uses a wood screw thread that drives directly into ceiling joists, wall studs, or any solid wood structure capable of supporting a bicycle. No nuts, no backing plates, no hardware store side quest — just drill a pilot hole with a 1/4" (6mm) bit and thread the hook in by hand.
The J-bend hook is made from 7mm steel rod, plated for corrosion resistance, and dipped in Park Tool's blue vinyl coating that cushions the contact point between your rim and the hook. That vinyl layer matters if you're hanging a bike by the wheel — bare metal hooks chew up rim finishes over time, and the coating on the 451 prevents that. The hook's inner width measures about 1.95" at the widest point with an inside J depth of 3.74", which accommodates road, cyclocross, and hybrid tire widths comfortably. If you're running anything wider than 1.95" — like a mountain bike with 2.2" or 2.4" tires — you'll want Park Tool's oversized 471 hooks instead.
Each 451-2 package includes 2 hooks, so you can hang a bike by both wheels, hang 2 bikes by the front wheel, or keep spare wheelsets up and out of the way. The wood thread is nominally 7mm outside diameter with 9 threads per inch, which bites aggressively into softwood joists and hardwood studs alike. Park Tool rates the 451 at a 115 lbs load capacity per hook when properly installed into solid material — well beyond what any bicycle weighs, but that number assumes the mounting material itself can handle the load. Drywall ceilings and hollow-core panels are not candidates here; you need to hit a joist or stud.
