Description
Garage floor space disappears fast when you're collecting bikes, and wall or ceiling storage is the obvious fix — but standard hooks don't always fit. If you're running wide mountain bike tires or deep-section aero road rims, you need a hook with enough clearance to cradle the wheel without pinching. Park Tool's 470 Oversized Storage Hook is the machine-thread version of their mid-size hook, built with a 75mm (2.95") inside width and 150mm (5.9") J-bend depth that accommodates tires up to about 2.5" wide.
The machine-thread design uses 50mm (2") of 10mm x 1.5mm threading with 2 included nuts, which means you're bolting through your mounting surface and clamping from both sides. That's the key difference between this hook and the wood-thread 471 — the 470 is designed to pass through a pre-drilled hole in metal racking, shelf supports, pallet racking, or similar materials where you have access to both the front and back of the mounting surface. You set the depth with one nut and lock it in place with the second. This is not a hook you screw directly into a ceiling joist or wall stud — if that's your situation, the 471 with wood threading is the one you want.
The hook itself is plated steel with a black vinyl coating over the J-bend section, which protects your rim finish from scratches and metal-on-metal contact. The vinyl doesn't cover the threaded zone, so the nuts seat directly on bare steel for a solid mechanical connection. Park Tool rates the 470 at 125 lbs of load capacity when properly installed, which covers any standard bicycle with margin to spare — just make sure the material you're mounting into can actually handle that weight.
