Description
Bottom bracket tools need to match the spline interface they're driving, and the BBT-22 handles one of the more common patterns you'll encounter: Shimano, SRAM, FSA, and other brands using the 20-spline external bearing cup design. This is the interface found on most modern threaded bottom brackets where the bearings sit outside the shell rather than inside it. The tool's 44mm diameter fits the external cups, and the 20 splines engage the notches machined into the cup's outer face.
Park Tool machines this from heat-treated steel with a black oxide finish that resists corrosion in shop environments where tools get exposed to degreaser, chain lube, and whatever else ends up on the bench. The 3/8" drive socket interface fits standard ratchets, breaker bars, or torque wrenches, which matters because bottom bracket cups have specific torque values and you'll want to hit them accurately on installation. The through-hole in the center allows use on bottom brackets with hollow spindles passing through the shell.
External bearing bottom brackets solved some problems but created others. The cups thread into the frame's bottom bracket shell and preload the bearings, which means proper installation torque directly affects how the bearings seat and wear. Under-torqued cups can work loose and create play. Over-torqued cups can bind the bearings or damage the threads. Having the right tool makes the difference between a bottom bracket that lasts and one that causes problems down the road.... Read More
