Description
External bottom bracket cups use a splined interface that requires a specific tool to install and remove. The Park Tool BBT-47-16 fits Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo, and other external bearing systems that share the same 16-notch pattern with a 44mm outer diameter. That covers a lot of ground—everything from budget Shimano Tourney cranks up through SRAM DUB and Campagnolo Ultra-Torque.
The tool body is forged steel, not stamped, which matters when you're applying the kind of torque these cups require. A 3/8-inch drive hole in the center accepts a ratchet, torque wrench, or breaker bar. There's also a 1/2-inch hex interface on the back, so you can drive it with a large adjustable wrench or hex socket if that's what you have on hand. The combination gives you options depending on the situation—a torque wrench for precise installation, a breaker bar for seized cups, or an adjustable wrench if you're working roadside.
One thing worth noting: this tool works on external cups only. If you're dealing with older square taper, ISIS, or Octalink systems, those use different extraction tools. Same goes for T47 threaded bottom brackets, which have a larger diameter and different spline count. The 44mm dimension and 16-notch pattern are specific to the external bearing standard that became dominant in the mid-2000s and remains the most common setup on modern road and mountain bikes....
