Description

Not all 16-notch bottom bracket cups share the same tool fitting diameter, and grabbing the wrong socket is a fast way to round out notches on a cup you're trying to save. Park Tool's BBT-59.3 is CNC-machined from aluminum to fit the smaller 16-notch pattern found on specific threaded bottom brackets — the ones with a 41-42mm major diameter (outside of notches) and 39mm minor diameter (inside of notches). If you're working on a Shimano Ultegra BBR60 or Deore XT MT-800, this is the tool that matches those cups. It is not the same tool as the BBT-9, which fits the larger 44-45mm diameter 16-notch fittings used by older Shimano external bearing cups, SRAM GXP, Chris King, and Campagnolo.

The BBT-59.3 uses a 3/8" drive that accepts any standard ratchet or torque wrench, which matters because bottom bracket cups have specific torque specs and you want to hit them accurately during installation. Park Tool manufactures this tool in-house and anodizes it for quick visual identification in a drawer full of similar-looking bottom bracket sockets. The aluminum construction keeps the tool light without sacrificing the precision of the notch engagement — the teeth need to seat fully into the cup's notches to transmit torque without slipping.

One feature worth noting is the integrated threading that makes the BBT-59.3 compatible with Park Tool's BBT-RS Bottom Bracket Tool Retaining System, sold separately. The BBT-RS threads into the bottom bracket spindle and uses a spring-loaded mechanism to hold the tool firmly against the cup during removal or installation. This matters most on cups where the notch engagement depth is minimal — without the retaining system, the tool can walk off the fitting under load, especially during high-torque removal of a seized cup. If you're doing bottom bracket work regularly, the BBT-RS pairing is worth having on hand.... Read More
