Description
Press fit bottom brackets are straightforward in theory but unforgiving in practice. Bearings that go in crooked come out early, and bearings driven out with the wrong tool risk scoring the inside of the shell. Park Tool's BBT-90.3 addresses both sides of that equation with a 3-piece tool set that handles removal and installation for the PF41 family of press fit standards — BB86, BB90, BB92, and compatible systems from Shimano, SRAM GXP, and Race Face that use a 22 or 24mm spindle.
The removal tool works on a collet principle: the shaft slides through the bearing bore, and spring-loaded fingers expand behind the bearing or cup once through. From there, a few controlled taps with a hammer drive the bearing straight out of the shell. It functions the same way a headset cup remover does, which means the force is applied evenly across the bearing's inner race rather than concentrated on one edge. The nominal outer diameter of the shaft is 22mm, and the fingers expand to 26mm to catch behind the bearing.
For installation, the BBT-90.3 includes 2 press-in bushings (part #669) that pair with a Park Tool bearing cup press — the HHP-2 or HHP-3, sold separately — to seat new bearings squarely into the bottom bracket shell. The bushings center the bearing on the press shaft and distribute force evenly during installation, which is critical for avoiding the cocked-bearing problem that leads to premature wear and creaking....
