Bottom bracket tools have a design problem: the cup you're trying to remove wants to push the tool out of engagement. You're applying torque, and the tool is climbing out of the splines, especially on stubborn cups that haven't moved in years. The system uses a long through-axle that passes through your bottom bracket shell and threads into the tool on the opposite side.
