Description
Cone wrenches need to be thin enough to fit on hub cones without adding leverage that damages the bearing surfaces. Park Tool's CBW-4 delivers the 9mm size at a thickness that slips into the narrow gap between cone and locknut where standard wrenches won't fit. The stamped steel construction keeps the profile slim while providing enough rigidity to hold adjustment while you tighten the locknut with a second wrench.
Hub bearing adjustment requires two wrenches working against each other—one holding the cone in position while the other tightens or loosens the locknut. The CBW-4 handles the cone side of that equation on hubs using 9mm cone flats, which covers a range of older Shimano hubs and various other manufacturers. The vinyl dip on the handle provides grip when your hands are covered in hub grease, which they will be if you're doing this job properly.
The offset head positions your hand away from the axle, giving clearance to rotate the wrench without your knuckles hitting spokes or the hub shell. This matters more than you'd think when you're making fine adjustments to eliminate bearing play without creating drag. Too tight and the bearings bind; too loose and you get wobble at the rim. The thin jaws let you feel that adjustment point without the wrench deflecting under load.... Read More
