Description
Cone wrenches need to be thin enough to fit into the narrow flats on hub cones, which is why your standard combination wrench from the hardware store won't work here. Park Tool's DCW-3 Double Ended Cone Wrench puts 17mm and 18mm sizes on opposite ends of a single tool, covering the most common cone dimensions found on rear hubs across the industry.
The wrench head measures just 2mm thick at the working surface, letting it slip into the gap between cone and locknut where standard wrenches simply won't fit. This thinness matters because hub adjustments require holding the cone stationary while you turn the locknut, and there's not much room to work with on most hub designs. The stamped CrMo steel construction keeps the tool rigid enough to apply the torque needed for proper adjustment without flexing or rounding off the cone flats.
Hub bearing adjustment is one of those jobs that separates functional bikes from properly maintained ones. Too loose and you get play in the wheel that accelerates bearing wear. Too tight and you create friction that slows you down and generates heat. Getting the preload right requires tools that fit precisely, and cone wrenches are purpose-built for exactly this task. The DCW-3 handles the adjustment side while you use a standard wrench on the locknut to secure everything in place.... Read More
