Description
Replacing a chain at the right time is one of those maintenance habits that pays for itself many times over — ride a worn chain too long and you'll chew through cassettes and chainrings that cost significantly more than a fresh chain. Park Tool's CC-2 Chain Checker gives you a direct percentage reading of chain wear so you can make that call with actual data instead of guessing. You insert the tool's pins into 2 chain links, lightly press the swing arm gauge, and read the wear percentage through the viewing window. No batteries, no calibration, no interpretation skills required.
The CC-2 reads in 0.25% increments, which gives you more information than a simple pass/fail gauge. You can track how your chain is progressing toward its replacement threshold and plan accordingly instead of discovering the chain is done on a random Tuesday before a ride. Park Tool's recommended replacement points are 0.75% for 5-to-10-speed chains, 0.5% for 11-to-12-speed chains, and 1% for single-speed chains — though it's always worth checking with your drivetrain manufacturer for their specific recommendation.
One compatibility note worth flagging: the CC-2 works with most single-speed and derailleur chains, including Shimano XTR 12-speed, but it is not compatible with SRAM Flattop or SRAM T-Type 12-speed chains. Those chains use a different roller geometry that requires Park Tool's CC-4 for accurate measurement. If you're running any other standard 1/2" pitch chain from 5-speed through 12-speed, the CC-2 handles it. The tool itself is laser-cut steel with permanent measurement markings, so the gauge won't wear down or become unreadable over time. It's a small, straightforward tool that takes about 3 seconds to use and lives in your toolbox until you need it.
