Description

Replacing a chain at the right time is one of the cheapest forms of drivetrain maintenance you can do — and skipping it is one of the most expensive. A worn chain accelerates wear on your cassette cogs and chainrings, turning a fifteen-dollar chain swap into a hundred-dollar-plus drivetrain overhaul. Park Tool's CC-3.2 Chain Checker gives you a definitive answer on chain condition in about three seconds, with no interpretation or guesswork involved.

The CC-3.2 is a go/no-go gauge with two measurement sides: 0.5% wear and 0.75% wear. You hook the curved end into a chain link, lower the gauge body down, and check whether the opposite tip drops into the chain or sits on top of the rollers. If it drops in, you've hit that wear threshold. If it rides on top, the chain is still within spec. The replacement threshold depends on your drivetrain — for 11 and 12-speed chains, replace at 0.5% wear, and for 5-to-10-speed chains, replace at 0.75%. The tighter threshold on 11 and 12-speed systems reflects the narrower tolerances those chains run, where even small amounts of stretch start causing skipping and poor shift quality.

The tool itself is laser-cut from precision steel with permanent measurement markings stamped into the body. No batteries, no calibration, nothing to drift or wear out over time. One important compatibility note: the CC-3.2 does not work with SRAM Flattop or SRAM T-Type 12-speed chains. Those chains use a different link profile, and Park Tool makes the CC-4 specifically for that application. If you're running any other 5-to-12-speed chain — Shimano, Campagnolo, KMC, SRAM non-Flattop — the CC-3.2 is the tool you want in your toolbox.

Features

  • Go/no-go gauge with 0.5% and 0.75% wear measurement sides
  • Compatible with most 5-to-12-speed derailleur chains with standard 1/2" pitch
  • Not compatible with SRAM Flattop or SRAM T-Type 12-speed chains (use the CC-4 for those)
  • Laser-cut precision steel construction with permanent measurement markings
  • Replace at 0.5% for 11 and 12-speed chains, 0.75% for 5-to-10-speed chains
  • No batteries, calibration, or moving parts
