Wiping a chain with a rag only cleans the outer plates, which is the one part of the chain that doesn't actually need cleaning. The grit that accelerates drivetrain wear sits between the rollers and inner plates, where a rag can't reach. Park Tool's CM-5.3 Cyclone Chain Scrubber addresses this by running the chain through 4 rotating brushes inside a sealed reservoir, scrubbing all surfaces simultaneously while the chain stays on the bike. You clamp the unit around the lower run of chain, fill the reservoir with solvent, and backpedal through roughly 30 crank revolutions.

The reservoir holds 59 mL (2 fl. oz.) of cleaning fluid, which is enough to run a full cleaning cycle. A magnet embedded in the base of the reservoir captures metal particles as they're scrubbed free, keeping them from recirculating back onto the chain during the cleaning pass. On the exit side, a wicking sponge draws excess solvent off the chain before it leaves the unit, which cuts down on the mess that makes chain cleaning such a dreaded chore. The CM-5.3 accepts every standard bicycle chain width, from wide 3/16" single-speed chains through narrow 12 and 13-speed chains. A reversible handle lets you mount the scrubber in either orientation so the chain can pass through in the forward direction, which matters for center drive e-bikes that can't be backpedaled.
