Description
Investment cast steel makes a meaningful difference in a chain tool. Cheap chain tools flex under load, which pushes the driving pin at an angle instead of straight through the rivet — that's how you end up with stiff links, damaged outer plates, or a pin that punches through crooked. Park Tool's CT-3.3 uses an investment cast steel body that resists deflection, keeping the driving pin aligned with the chain rivet throughout the full stroke. The comfortable T-handle with fine threading gives you smooth, controlled rotation so you can feel exactly when the rivet breaks free or seats flush.
The CT-3.3 covers single-speed chains (1/8", 3/16", and half-link) as well as all derailleur chains from 5-speed through 12-speed, including SRAM T-Type, SRAM Flattop, and Shimano XTR 12-speed. A floating locating shelf self-adjusts to accommodate any chain width, so you don't need to fiddle with a separate setting when moving between a track bike's 1/8" chain and a 12-speed derailleur chain. You just seat the chain on the shelf and start driving. One note on Campagnolo: the CT-3.3 will install and remove Campagnolo 11, 12, and 13-speed chain rivets, but it cannot peen them. Campagnolo's rivet design requires a separate peening step that this tool doesn't perform.
The driving pin is the consumable part of any chain tool — it takes the brunt of every rivet push and will eventually wear or bend. Park Tool makes this a non-issue on the CT-3.3 by using a replaceable pin (part number CTP-C) made from hardened alloy tool steel. When the pin wears out, you swap it with a 7mm box end wrench and you're back in business. No reason to replace the whole tool. This is a bench tool, not a trailside repair item. The steel construction and handle length give you the mechanical advantage you want for stubborn rivets on corroded or road-grime-packed chains, but it's too heavy for a saddle bag. Park Tool makes the CT-5 for that purpose.
