Description
Chain tool pins are wear items. If you use a CT-4, CT-4.2, CT-4.3, or CT-11 regularly, the driving pin eventually mushrooms, bends, or snaps — and when it does, the tool is useless until you replace it. Park Tool's CTP-4K Replacement Chain Tool Pin Kit gives you 4 hardened replacement pins and 1 spare 5/32" ball bearing so you can get back to breaking and installing chains without replacing the entire tool.
The replacement process is straightforward: unthread the plunger from the tool body, unthread the retaining nut, and pull out the old pin. A ball bearing sits underneath the pin inside the plunger assembly, and you need to make sure it stays put during the swap. The spare bearing in the CTP-4K covers you if the original gets lost or damaged during a pin change — but don't install a second bearing if the original is still in place, because running 2 bearings will damage the plunger. Drop in the new pin, thread the nut back on, and reassemble.
One thing to keep in mind: the CTP-4K only fits Park Tool's CT-4 series and CT-11 chain tools. If you're running a CT-3, CT-3.2, CT-3.3, CT-5, or CT-7, you need the CTP-C pin set instead — different pin, different thread. With 4 pins in the kit, you're set for multiple replacements before you need to reorder. If you do a lot of chain work in a home shop or you're a mechanic going through pins regularly, keeping a CTP-4K on the shelf means the tool is never out of commission for long.
