Description
Cup-and-cone bottom brackets need 2 different fittings to service: a 36mm wrench for the fixed cup and a pin spanner for the adjusting cup. Park Tool's HCW-4 Crank and Bottom Bracket Wrench puts both on a single double-ended tool so you're not digging through drawers mid-job. The 36mm box end fits the raised wrench flats on fixed cups, while the opposite end carries 2 pins spaced 29mm center-to-center that engage the pin holes on adjusting cups. If you're working on cup-and-cone setups like Sugino 75, Sugino Super Lap, or Hatta R9400 bottom brackets, the HCW-4 covers both sides of the shell.
The wrench uses Park Tool's Y-head design, which gives you a solid grip angle and enough leverage to break loose cups without encouraging the kind of overforce that damages threads. The stamped steel body keeps the tool straightforward and light, and the die-cut and laser-cut openings maintain consistent fitment on the wrench flats. Park Tool heat-treats the steel and applies a nickel plating over it, so the contact surfaces resist rounding and corrosion over years of use. The pins are replaceable if they wear down, which means you're maintaining the tool rather than replacing it.
One thing to note: the HCW-4 handles fixed cups and adjusting cups only. You'll still need an HCW-5 lockring wrench to remove the lockring that secures the adjusting cup, and a crank puller to get the crankarms off before you can access the bottom bracket. If you're building out a home toolkit for traditional bottom bracket service, the HCW-4 and HCW-5 together cover the bottom bracket side of things. This wrench is purpose-built for cup-and-cone systems and does not apply to modern cartridge, external bearing, or press-fit bottom brackets.
