Description

Most tasks in a bike shop don't call for a full-size hammer. Pressing in a star-fangled nut, seating a headset crown, tapping out a press-fit bottom bracket cup — these are controlled, moderate-force strikes where a lighter head gives you more accuracy and less risk of overshooting. Park Tool's HMR-8 Shop Hammer is built around that reality, with an 8 oz forged steel head that keeps things proportional to the kind of work you're actually doing on a bicycle.

The dual-head design is what makes this useful for shop work specifically. One end is a precision-machined forged steel striking face at 25mm diameter for direct-contact tasks where you need full force transfer. The other end is a 32mm non-marring composite tip for situations where you're striking a component or tool surface that can't take steel-on-metal contact — think bearing races, dust caps, or anything with a finished surface you'd rather not dent. The composite tip is replaceable (part #293-8), so when it eventually mushrooms out from repeated use, you swap the tip instead of replacing the whole hammer.

The shaft is fiberglass rather than wood, which matters if you're working around solvents and degreasers that would eventually dry out and crack a wooden handle. Park Tool wraps it with a soft-touch grip that stays manageable even with greasy hands. At 305mm long, the HMR-8 is shorter than the full-size HMR-4, which makes it easier to maneuver around frames clamped in a stand and practical enough to toss in a travel toolkit or event toolbox without burning a lot of space....
