Description
Master link pliers exist because fingernails and tire levers aren't proper chain tools. Modern quick links require compressing both plates simultaneously while pulling the chain apart, and trying to do that by hand usually ends with pinched fingers and a link that's still stubbornly connected. The Park Tool MLP-1.2 turns this into a one-squeeze operation, with jaws designed specifically to grip both outer plates of a master link and compress them together while the plier handles spread the chain apart.
The tool works on master links from SRAM, Shimano, KMC, Campagnolo, and Wippermann across all common chain widths. Whether you're dealing with an 8-speed chain on a commuter or a 12-speed chain on a race bike, the jaw geometry accommodates the different plate widths and pin spacings. The compound leverage design means you're not fighting against spring tension with brute force—a controlled squeeze does the work.
Beyond removal, the MLP-1.2 also helps with installation. Master links need to be fully seated before riding, and the pliers let you pull the chain taut to snap the link closed properly. This matters more than most people realize—a partially engaged master link can release under power, and discovering that mid-sprint is not the kind of excitement anyone needs.... Read More
