Description
Chrome vanadium steel is the go-to alloy for professional-grade hand tools, and that is exactly what Park Tool uses to forge the MW Metric Wrench. This is a classic combination wrench design with an angled open end on one side and a 12-point box end on the other, covering the metric fastener range you encounter on bicycles and in the shop. The wrench is chrome plated and polished after forging, then center-dipped in Park Tool's blue vinyl coating across the handle section. That vinyl does two things: it gives you a positive grip when your hands are greasy or covered in degreaser, and it clearly marks each wrench size so you can grab the right one without squinting at stamped numbers.
The 12-point box end engages fasteners at 30° increments, which matters in tight spaces where you can only swing the wrench a short arc before repositioning. The box end is also angled off center from the handle, giving your knuckles clearance from the work surface. The open end handles situations where you need to slip the wrench onto a fastener from the side, like pedal flats or open-access hub nuts. Between the two ends, you have the fastener covered regardless of access angle.
The MW series spans 6mm through 17mm, sold individually so you can replace a single worn wrench or fill a specific gap in your tool roll without buying a full set. If you're building a shop tool kit from scratch, the 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, and 15mm wrenches see the most action on bicycle work: 8mm and 10mm for pedal axle flats and various component bolts, 9mm for older nutted axle wheels, and 15mm for pedal installation and removal. Buying them individually also means you can keep duplicates of the sizes that tend to walk off the bench.
