Description
Hydraulic brake calipers need piston service when contamination builds up or when you're replacing pads and notice the pistons aren't retracting evenly. The Park Tool PP-1.2 handles the reset step—pressing pistons back into their bores so fresh pads have room to fit over the rotor. What makes this version useful is the block design: dual-sided with different widths to match both two-piston and four-piston caliper configurations without swapping tools mid-job.
The press block itself is machined plastic, which matters because you're pushing directly against piston faces. Metal tools risk scoring the ceramic or phenolic piston surfaces, and any damage there compromises the seal interface. The PP-1.2 applies even pressure across both pistons simultaneously on two-piston calipers, or pairs of pistons on four-piston setups, which keeps them retracting in sync rather than cocking sideways in the bore.
Most piston press needs come up during pad swaps. As pads wear, pistons extend further to take up the gap. New pads are thicker, so the pistons need to go back in. The other common scenario is sticky pistons—when one side extends more than the other during lever pulls, or when pistons don't retract smoothly after releasing the lever. Pressing them home and cycling them a few times often clears minor contamination issues.... Read More
