Description
Replacing brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes should be straightforward, but there is one step that trips people up: getting the pistons pushed back into the caliper body so the fresh pads have room to clear the rotor. Flat-blade screwdrivers and tire levers technically work, but they concentrate force on a small area and risk cocking the piston sideways in its bore. Park Tool's PP-1.2 Hydraulic Brake Piston Press is built specifically for this job. The wedge-shaped blade slides between the pads inside the caliper, spreading both pads evenly and pressing the pistons back in a controlled, parallel motion.
The tapered end of the PP-1.2 measures 25mm wide, which fits into most hydraulic disc brake caliper bodies including Shimano XTR. Total insertable length is 26mm, with a wedge thickness of 4.1mm. That taper does the work gradually rather than forcing everything at once, which keeps the pistons retracting evenly. The dual-density handle gives you a solid grip when you need to apply firm pressure, especially on calipers where contamination or age has made the pistons sticky.
One compatibility note worth knowing: wedge-style piston tools like the PP-1.2 are not intended for brake systems that use ceramic pistons, such as Shimano road disc brake calipers. Ceramic pistons can crack under the concentrated point-loading that a wedge design applies. If you are working on Shimano road hydraulic brakes with ceramic pistons, you will need a flat-style pad spreader like the Park Tool PS-1 instead. For mountain bike calipers and most other hydraulic systems using standard piston materials, the PP-1.2 is the right tool.... Read More
