Description
Hydraulic disc brake pads sit inside calipers with minimal clearance, and that gap shrinks every time you squeeze the lever with the wheel out. The pistons self-adjust to compensate for pad wear, which means they creep outward when there's no rotor to stop them. Park Tool's PS-1 spreader resets those pistons back to their starting position, creating the clearance you need to slide a wheel back in or install fresh pads without fighting the caliper.
The tool works on virtually any hydraulic disc brake caliper regardless of manufacturer. Two flat blades slide between the pads and push both pistons simultaneously, applying even pressure across the piston faces. This matters because prying with a screwdriver or tire lever tends to cock the pistons at an angle, which can damage seals or cause uneven pad contact. The PS-1's parallel blade design keeps everything square.
You'll reach for this tool constantly once it's in your kit. Wheel changes during travel when the bike was stored lever-down, pad swaps when the old ones are worn to the backing plate, or clearing space after someone grabbed the brake during a wheel-off moment—all standard uses. The compact size fits easily in a tool roll or shop apron pocket, and the plastic construction won't scratch piston faces or pad surfaces.... Read More
