Description

Cutting steerer tubes, seatposts, and handlebars requires a hacksaw that tracks straight and doesn't wander mid-cut. The Park Tool SAW-1 addresses the two main failure points of cheap hacksaws: blade flex and frame twist. The die-cast aluminum frame maintains rigidity under cutting pressure, and the blade tensioning system pulls the blade tight enough to eliminate the sideways drift that ruins precision cuts. When you're trimming a carbon steerer tube where a crooked cut means a compromised headset interface, that stability matters.

The SAW-1 accepts standard 12-inch hacksaw blades, so you're not locked into proprietary consumables. Park Tool includes a 24 teeth-per-inch blade that works well for aluminum and steel—fine enough for clean cuts without excessive material removal, coarse enough to cut efficiently without glazing over. For carbon fiber work, you'd swap to a carbide-grit blade or a finer tooth count, but the included blade handles the metal cutting that makes up most shop work. The quick-release lever lets you swap blades in seconds without hunting for a wrench.

Ergonomics separate a usable hacksaw from one that cramps your hand after three cuts. The SAW-1's handle positions your wrist naturally for the push stroke where cutting actually happens, and the front grip gives you a stable guide hand position. The frame geometry keeps your knuckles clear of the workpiece, which sounds minor until you've scraped your hand on a freshly cut steerer tube. At just over a pound, it's light enough for sustained use but substantial enough to feel controlled rather than flimsy.... Read More
