Description
Removing a cassette is a two-tool job: you need something to hold the cogs from spinning, and something to drive the lockring tool. Park Tool's SR-12.2 Sprocket Remover and Chain Whip handles both tasks in a single unit. The chain whip end wraps around the cassette to counteract rotation, while the opposite end incorporates a 1" (25.4mm) box-end wrench that fits Park Tool freewheel and cassette lockring tools directly. That means you're holding one tool instead of juggling two, which makes the whole operation more controlled, especially if you're working alone without a stand to stabilize the wheel.
The SR-12.2 covers 7-to-13 speed road and mountain bike cassettes, including current SRAM eTap AXS and Shimano XTR systems. It also works with single-speed cassettes that use a 3/32" cog. If you've been running the older SR-12, the .2 update extends that compatibility range to cover 13-speed drivetrains as they've entered the market. The chain section uses hardened pins that keep the chain locked onto the cog teeth under load, which matters because chain whip slippage under high torque is how you end up with scraped knuckles and gouged cassettes.
Construction is heat-treated steel throughout, which resists the bending and flexing that eventually kills cheaper chain whips. The handle is 15" long with a molded vinyl grip, giving you enough leverage to break loose even corroded or heavily torqued lockrings without white-knuckling it. Park Tool makes this one in the USA. You'll still need a separate lockring tool like the FR-5.2 to actually thread into the lockring, but the SR-12.2's box-end wrench drives those tools directly, so you're not reaching for an adjustable wrench on top of everything else.
