That chamois that felt fine at mile twenty starts losing its shape by mile sixty, or the leg grippers that seemed secure begin creeping up your thigh during hard efforts. Pearl Izumi built the Pro Bib Shorts around their Levitate PRO chamois specifically to address what happens when you stay in the saddle longer than most shorts are designed to handle. The pad uses a triple-density Suspension Core that distributes your weight across a larger surface area, and unlike single-density foam that compresses and stays compressed, the multi-layer construction maintains support even as the hours stack up.
The chamois technology goes beyond just the foam densities. Pearl Izumi added what they call a 1:1 Boundary Layer on top, which is essentially a floating top sheet that moves independently from the foam beneath it. The main body uses Italian PRO Transfer fabric, a blend of nylon, polyester, and Lycra that delivers compression without feeling like it's fighting you. Seven panels shape the shorts to your body with minimal seaming, which matters because every seam is a potential friction point.
