Description

Seventy-five grams. That is the total weight of Q36.5's Sleeveless Base Layer 1 — a number that Q36.5 says resulted from the design itself, not from chasing a weight target. The Bolzano-based brand knits this base layer on Karl Mayer seamless machines, which are capable of producing tubular fabric structures without the stitched armhole seams that most competing sleeveless base layers still require. The only seams on the entire garment are 2 short joining stitches at the shoulders. Everything else — front panel, back panel, armholes — is continuous knitted fabric, and that elimination of thread and overlapping material is where the 75-gram figure comes from.

The knitting process does more than just remove seams. It allows Q36.5 to vary yarn density throughout the garment to match the body's sweat zones. The front uses a honeycomb knit structure at a tighter density, while the back panel is noticeably thinner and more open to accelerate moisture transfer where heat builds up most during sustained efforts. That dual-density approach creates a micro air layer between your skin and your jersey, and that gap is where sweat collects, spreads, and evaporates — producing a measurable cooling effect rather than just moving moisture from one saturated layer to another. If you have been riding in a standard polyester base layer and wondering whether the upgrade is worth it, the difference is in that structured airspace.

The fabric composition — 44% polypropylene, 44% polyamide, 12% elastane — matters here because polypropylene is hydrophobic. It physically resists absorbing moisture, which means the fibers themselves do not get heavy or clammy when you are sweating hard. The polyamide provides durability and structure, and Q36.5 specifically notes that the Karl Mayer knitting process produces a rip-resistant mesh, so the lightweight construction does not come at the cost of longevity. The elastane delivers multidirectional stretch with low resistance to movement, which you will notice as a second-skin fit that does not bind or shift when you are in the drops or reaching for a bottle. Q36.5 rates the Base Layer 1 for temperatures above 22°C, making it a dedicated warm-weather piece.... Read More
