Description
Mid-depth carbon wheels occupy a particular sweet spot in the performance conversation: deep enough to matter aerodynamically, shallow enough to remain composed when the wind shifts. The Reynolds AR46 delivers on this premise with a 46mm rim profile shaped by the company's DET2 (Dispersive Effect Termination) design philosophy. Rather than optimizing for a narrow band of wind tunnel conditions, this rim shape addresses the variable yaw angles riders actually encounter on the road. The result is a wheel that maintains predictable handling when crosswinds arrive unexpectedly, letting you stay in an efficient position rather than fighting for control.
Reynolds uses their CR3 carbon layup for these rims, the same material technology found across the AR line. The 21mm internal width creates a tubeless-ready channel that supports modern tire profiles, with the hooked bead design accommodating a wide pressure range and maintaining compatibility with any tubeless tire on the market. Reynolds optimized the rim shape around 28mm tires, though the width handles everything from 25mm race rubber to the wider casings common on mixed-surface rides. The external width reaches 31mm at the widest point before tapering toward the brake track, creating the bulged profile that defines the aerodynamic character of the wheel.
The AR series represents Reynolds' approach to making their rim technology accessible at a lower price point than the Blacklabel line. The savings come from the hub and spoke specification rather than the rim itself. Reynolds/Ringle SRX Road hubs handle the rotational duties with 100% CNC-machined construction and a 3-pawl freehub mechanism providing 10 degrees of engagement. That engagement angle means roughly 36 pickup points per revolution, quick enough for responsive acceleration without the complexity of denser ratchet systems. Sapim Sprint spokes connect the hubs to rims using external brass nipples, a combination that prioritizes durability and serviceability over the weight savings found in aluminum nipples on the costlier builds....
