Description
Headset assemblies rarely get the attention they deserve until something goes wrong—play develops in the steerer, steering feels notchy, or bearing preload becomes impossible to dial in properly. The Ritchey Classic Upper Headset Assembly handles the top end of your headset stack with a complete IS42/28.6 unit that includes the pressed bearing, compression ring, and top cover in a single integrated package. This is the upper portion only, designed to work with frames using the IS42 internal standard and a standard 1-1/8" steerer tube.
The IS42 designation refers to the 42mm bore diameter pressed into your frame's head tube, which is one of the more common internal headset standards you'll encounter on road and gravel frames. Ritchey machines the bearing seat and compression ring to work as a matched system, eliminating the guesswork that comes with mixing components from different manufacturers. The silver finish matches Ritchey's Classic aesthetic, making this a natural replacement for worn units on their steel and aluminum frames or a clean upgrade on any compatible build.
If you're chasing down a vague clunk or looseness in your front end, the upper headset bearing is often the culprit—it sees more contamination from sweat and weather than the lower bearing, and it handles the preload adjustment that keeps everything snug. Replacing it as a complete assembly ensures all the mating surfaces work together properly rather than trying to press a new bearing into a worn race or reusing a compression ring that's taken a set....
