Description
Cork handlebar tape occupies a specific niche in the bar tape market—riders who want cushioning and grip without the synthetic feel of foam or gel alternatives. Ritchey's COMP Cork tape uses natural cork particles bonded into the tape construction, which creates a surface texture that absorbs hand sweat rather than becoming slippery when wet. The material compresses under grip pressure and slowly rebounds, providing vibration damping that differs fundamentally from the instant squish of gel tapes.
The adhesive backing on this tape uses a pressure-sensitive design that sticks firmly during installation but allows repositioning if you don't nail the wrap angle on your first attempt. Ritchey includes two finishing plugs and two rolls of finishing tape in the package, which covers one handlebar completely. The tape width accommodates standard road bar diameters and the length handles compact, ergo, and traditional drop shapes without running short on the tops.
Cork construction does require different care than synthetic alternatives. The material can absorb oils from your hands over time, which darkens light-colored tape and eventually breaks down the cork binding. Black tape hides this aging better than lighter colors, and the COMP-level pricing makes periodic replacement reasonable for riders who prefer the natural cork feel but don't want to invest in premium-tier tape every six months....
