Description

Flared drop bars solve a specific problem that traditional compact bends don't address: hand position options in the drops that match how riders actually want to grip their bars during descents and rough terrain. The Ritchey Comp Ergo Max takes the Ergomax shape that Ritchey developed for their higher-end bars and executes it in 6061 aluminum, delivering the same 12-degree flare at a more accessible price point. The flare widens your hand position in the drops without affecting the hoods, giving you a more stable platform when you're descending or riding aggressively without compromising your positioning during normal riding.

The bar's geometry builds on Ritchey's Comp Curve design with modifications that accommodate the flared drops. A 73mm reach keeps the hoods accessible without excessive stretch, while the 128mm drop provides adequate hand clearance below the bar top. The tops sweep back at 5 degrees with a 5-degree upsweep, creating a more natural wrist angle during long stints on the bar tops. These aren't dramatic changes from traditional bar geometry, but they add up to a shape that fits more hand positions comfortably across a longer ride.

Where this bar makes the most sense is gravel riding or mixed-terrain road cycling where you're spending time in the drops on variable surfaces. The wider grip in the drops creates a more planted feeling when the front wheel starts moving around, and the flare angles your wrists in a way that reduces fatigue during extended drops riding. If you're coming from a traditional road bend and primarily ride smooth pavement, the flare may feel unnecessary—but for riders who've found themselves wishing for more stability in technical sections, this addresses that complaint directly....
