Description
Headset cartridges wear out faster than the cups they press into, which is why Ritchey designed the Comp Switch as a modular system where the bearing units can be replaced independently. The Comp Switch Upper Headset Cartridge drops into existing Comp Switch cups without removing the pressed-in components from your frame, letting you restore smooth steering feel in minutes rather than dealing with headset press tools and the risk of damaging a carbon head tube. This approach makes particular sense for bikes that see regular use in wet or dirty conditions, where bearing contamination accelerates wear and replacement becomes a maintenance interval rather than a once-in-a-lifetime event.
The cartridge uses loose ball bearings running in a machined race, a configuration that prioritizes serviceability over the sealed-cartridge approach found in some competing systems. Ritchey builds these with their standard Comp-level finishing, which means reliable performance without the weight optimization or exotic materials found in their WCS and Pro tiers. The practical upside is a replacement part that costs significantly less than a complete headset while restoring factory-fresh rotation quality.
Three versions cover the most common tapered steerer configurations: IS52, IS47, and IS41 lower bearing diameters that correspond to different head tube standards. The IS designation refers to the integrated headset standard where the bearing seats directly into a machined pocket in the frame rather than requiring a separate pressed cup. You'll want to measure your existing cartridge or check your frame manufacturer's specifications before ordering, since these dimensions refer to the bearing seat diameter rather than the steerer tube size....
