Description
Threaded headsets still show up where they make sense — vintage steel restorations, touring bikes that have been in the family for decades, randonneur builds, and city bikes where a quill stem and threaded steerer keep the cockpit simple. The Ritchey Fit External Cup Threaded Headset is the 1" EC30/25.4 option for those builds, using alloy cups with steel races and Ritchey's retainer bearings to keep the steering smooth without reinventing the format.
The external cup design presses into a 30mm head tube bore, which is the standard 1" threaded dimension you'll find on the vast majority of older road, touring, and city frames. Stack height comes in at 33.5mm, so if you're rebuilding around an existing fork and stem you can check your stack math before pulling the trigger. The crown race seats on a 26.4mm fork crown, which is the standard 1" threaded crown race seat diameter.
Two things worth flagging before you buy. First, the upper assembly uses a threaded locknut that clamps to a 25.4mm 24tpi quill steerer — this is a threaded headset, not threadless, so it's not the right part for a 1" threadless setup. Second, no compression cap is included because threaded headsets don't use one — preload is set by the locknut against the adjustable race. If you're cross-shopping with the threadless version of the Fit External Cup, make sure you're picking the right format for your fork.... Read More
