Description
Carbon seatposts and handlebars introduce a problem that didn't exist in the all-metal era: clamp them too hard and you crush them, clamp them too lightly and they slip. Ritchey's Liquid Torque is the assembly paste that splits the difference. The micro-particles suspended in the paste create friction between the two clamped surfaces, which means you can hit the manufacturer's recommended torque spec — say 5Nm on a stem faceplate — and the bar actually stays put instead of rotating on the first pothole.
The compound works across the materials you'll actually encounter on a modern bike: carbon, titanium, aluminum, and steel. That means one 5g packet covers seatpost-to-frame, stem-to-steerer, stem-to-bar, and saddle rail-to-clamp duties regardless of what your frame and components are made of. Ritchey also notes corrosion protection between dissimilar metals, which matters if you're running a titanium seatpost in an aluminum frame or trying to prevent the aluminum-on-carbon galvanic reaction that turns seatposts into permanent installations.
Use it anywhere torque specs are tight and slippage is the failure mode you're worried about. Carbon handlebars in an alloy stem are the classic case — the manufacturer prints a low torque number on the stem face for a reason, and Liquid Torque is how you honor that number without watching your hoods rotate down on the first hard braking effort. Same logic applies to carbon seatposts that creep down under rider weight, or saddle rails that won't stop tilting no matter how hard you crank the clamp bolt.... Read More
