Description
Splitting a bike frame in two sounds like a mechanic's nightmare until you see Ritchey's Break-Away system in action. The Septimer puts a carbon fiber all-road frame into an airline-friendly travel case that slips under most baggage size limits. The frame separates at the downtube via a clamped coupler, reassembling with a 5Nm torque specification and no special tools beyond a torque key. What arrives at your destination rides like a proper carbon frame because it is one, built with stainless steel joints at the separation points for long-term durability under repeated disassembly.
External cable routing simplifies the packing process since there are no internal routes to manage when breaking down the frame. Mechanical groupsets require Ritchey's separate cable routing kit with inline disconnectors that let you separate shift and brake cables at the frame junction without cutting housing. Electronic shifting sidesteps that entirely. The frame accepts semi-wireless Shimano Di2 12-speed systems using the EW-SD300 wire through stealth internal routing, keeping the cockpit clean while maintaining Break-Away functionality. One compatibility note worth knowing: the frame does not support SRAM T-Type or other Direct Mount drivetrain standards.
The geometry and tire clearance position the Septimer as a do-everything road frame rather than a dedicated gravel or race platform. Clearance for 700x48c tires opens up mixed-surface riding without committing to a gravel-specific wheelset. The included carbon adventure fork carries triple mounts per leg rated for 3kg each side, enough for frame bags or cargo cages on longer routes. Flat-mount disc brakes accept 140mm rotors directly or 160mm with adapters. Rack and fender mounts on both the frame and fork extend the build options into light touring territory.... Read More
