Description
Travel cases protect your bike during transit, but they don't solve the fundamental problem of fitting a full-sized road frame into airline-friendly dimensions. The Ritchey Septimer Break-Away frameset eliminates the need for oversized luggage by splitting at the seat tube and down tube, allowing the complete frame to pack into the included travel case and dodge most carriers' oversized baggage fees. This isn't a compromise design or a folding bike aesthetic — it's a full carbon all-road frame that happens to separate into two pieces when you need it to, the product of four decades of Tom Ritchey's thinking about how to build the ultimate travel bike.
Both the frame and fork are carbon fiber, with the layup left visible under a matte finish. The Break-Away system places its couplers at the top of the seat tube and along the down tube just ahead of the bottom bracket, and stainless-steel joints cinch the two halves together without creaking or wandering once torqued. Reassembly at your destination takes minutes, and the ride quality gives up nothing to a conventional frame — the junctions sit where they don't interfere with torsional stiffness, so acceleration stays crisp and the front end tracks cleanly through corners.
Geometry lands in genuine all-road territory rather than pretending to be a race bike or a pure gravel machine. Chainstays measure 440mm across every size, longer than current gravel fashion dictates. The longer rear end plants the bike at speed, calms the steering on rough surfaces, and leaves room for modern drivetrains to work without cross-chain contortions. A 75mm bottom bracket drop, 70.8° head tube angle on the size Medium, and 73.5° seat angle put the rider centered over the pedals for long mixed-terrain days rather than forward-tilted for attacks....
