Description
Flared drops on a gravel handlebar create a wider grip position in the drops than on the hoods, which changes how the bike handles when you're descending loose terrain or navigating technical sections at speed. The Ritchey WCS Beacon takes this concept further than most gravel bars, building 24 degrees of flare into the drops to create a substantially wider platform when your hands move down from the hoods. This isn't a subtle flare designed to look progressive on paper—it's a deliberate geometry choice that gives you more leverage for steering inputs and more stability when conditions deteriorate.
The bar's reach and drop measurements read shorter than traditional road dimensions, which reflects how gravel riders actually use the drops. You're not sustaining aero positions for hours; you're diving into the drops for descents, rough sections, or when headwinds make the hoods uncomfortable. The Beacon's shallower drop puts that position closer to the hoods, reducing the stretch required to access it and making transitions between hand positions faster. This geometry works particularly well for riders running wider tires and lower pressures, where the bike's behavior changes enough that quick access to the drops actually matters.
Ritchey machines the WCS Beacon from 7050 aluminum using their double-butted process, which removes material from low-stress areas while maintaining wall thickness where loads concentrate. The result lands at a claimed 280 grams for the 44cm width, competitive with carbon alternatives that cost significantly more. The 31.8mm clamp area uses Ritchey's knurled texture for stem grip, and the tops flatten slightly for comfort during extended climbing positions.... Read More
