Description
Carbon fiber makes sense for headset spacers in ways it doesn't always make sense for other components—the weight savings per spacer is minimal in absolute terms, but spacers stack, and a 30mm stack of aluminum spacers adds up to grams you could eliminate without sacrificing function. Ritchey's WCS Carbon Headset Spacers use unidirectional carbon construction to cut weight from your steerer tube stack while maintaining the compressive strength needed to handle headset preload and stem clamping forces. The spacers come in 5mm and 10mm heights with a 1-1/8" inner diameter that fits standard threadless steerer tubes.
The practical advantage extends beyond weight. Carbon spacers don't corrode or seize onto steerer tubes the way aluminum spacers can when dissimilar metals and moisture create galvanic reactions over time. If you've ever had to fight a stuck aluminum spacer off a steel or titanium steerer, you understand the appeal. The WCS spacers also eliminate the visual mismatch that occurs when you pair a carbon fork with silver aluminum spacers—a minor detail, but one that matters on a build where component selection reflects intention.
Installation follows standard headset spacer protocol. Stack the spacers on your steerer tube in whatever combination achieves your desired bar height, install your stem, and adjust headset preload through the top cap before torquing stem bolts. Ritchey recommends applying carbon assembly compound to the steerer tube and spacer contact surfaces to prevent slippage without requiring excessive clamping force. The spacers work with any 1-1/8" threadless system regardless of headset brand.... Read More
