Description

Headset bearings don't get much attention until they start causing problems—notchy steering, play in the front end, or that gritty feeling when you turn the bars that tells you the races are pitted. The Ritchey WCS Lower Bearing handles the bottom position in integrated headset systems using the IS47/33 standard, which is one of the more common specifications you'll find on modern road and gravel frames with tapered steerer tubes. This is a direct replacement part for frames that spec a 47mm inner diameter head tube bore at the lower position with a 33mm crown race seat, fitting the bottom cup of 1-1/8" to 1-1/2" tapered steerer configurations.

The bearing itself uses Ritchey's WCS-level construction with a 36-degree by 45-degree angular contact design, which is the industry-standard orientation for lower headset positions where the bearing needs to handle both radial loads from steering and axial loads from impacts. This cartridge-style sealed bearing drops directly into frames already running the IS47 integrated standard—there's no pressed cup to deal with, just the bearing assembly sitting in the machined bore of the head tube. The sealed cartridge design keeps contamination out better than loose-ball arrangements, which matters for the lower bearing position that sees more water, grit, and road spray than the upper bearing.

If you're chasing a vague feeling in the front end or your current bearing has developed that telltale roughness when you rock the bike back and forth with the front brake locked, this is the part that fixes it. The lower bearing takes the brunt of impact loads when you hit holes or drop off curbs, so it typically wears faster than the upper bearing in most riding conditions. Worth noting that IS47/33 is specific—measure your head tube bore and confirm the crown race seat diameter before ordering, because headset standards have proliferated to the point where similar-sounding specs often aren't interchangeable.
