Description
Headset bearings live in the dirtiest part of your bike — sweat drips down the steerer, road grit kicks up off the front tire, and the lower bearing in particular takes the brunt of braking forces and trail chatter. When the lower starts feeling notchy or you hear that faint grinding when you turn the bars at low speed, you don't need to replace the whole headset. Ritchey's WCS Integrated IS Lower Headset in the IS52/40 size gives you the lower bearing assembly for tapered 1.5" steerers, with a 51.9/40/8mm sealed cartridge bearing running 45°/45° angular contact geometry — and that's almost always the part that goes first.
The WCS designation is Ritchey's race-grade tier, and on a headset bearing the meaningful upgrade is the surface treatment. The bearing is titanium-coated for corrosion resistance, which matters when you ride in wet weather or live somewhere humid enough that condensation builds up inside the head tube. The 45°/45° angular contact geometry handles both the radial loads from steering and the axial loads from braking and rough surfaces, which is why it's the standard for performance road and gravel headsets.
This is the lower assembly only, so you'll want to confirm your frame uses the IS52/40 standard before ordering. IS52 means an integrated head tube with a 52mm inner diameter at the lower cup, and the 40 refers to a 40mm crown race seat — the standard configuration for a tapered fork with a 1.5" lower steerer. Most modern road and gravel frames built around tapered forks use this spec, but always check your frame documentation or the markings on the existing bearing if you're unsure.... Read More
