Description
Headset bearings take constant abuse from road vibration, steering loads, and the occasional pothole impact, which makes the lower bearing assembly particularly vulnerable since it handles the majority of steering forces. The Ritchey WCS Lower Headset Assembly provides a direct replacement for worn lower bearings in press-fit headtube configurations, using the same cartridge bearing and compression ring design found in complete WCS headset assemblies. When your headset develops play or roughness, the lower bearing is usually the culprit—this kit lets you address the problem without replacing components that still have life in them.
The assembly uses a 45-degree/45-degree angular contact bearing seated in a machined alloy compression ring, matching the geometry Ritchey uses across their WCS press-fit headset line. The press-fit design eliminates the threaded cup interface, which means installation requires a headset press rather than hand tools, but also means the bearing seats directly against the headtube bore for a more precise fit. This particular assembly fits headtubes with a 44mm internal diameter and works with 1-1/8" steerers, covering the most common road bike configuration.
Ritchey machines the compression ring from 7075 aluminum, the same alloy grade used in their high-end stem and handlebar components. The bearing itself is a sealed cartridge unit that can be serviced or replaced independently if needed, though most riders will swap the entire assembly when the time comes. One detail worth noting: this is the lower assembly only, so you'll need to source the upper bearing separately if both positions need attention.... Read More
