Description
Bar tape wears out faster than most components on a road bike, which means the replacement cycle matters as much as the initial feel. Ritchey's WCS Race Handlebar Tape uses a 3mm gel-backed construction that balances cushioning against bar feel—thick enough to absorb road vibration on long rides but thin enough that you can still sense what's happening through the handlebar on technical descents or in a sprint. The gel backing does the damping work while the top surface provides grip without requiring a death squeeze on the bars.
The tape ships with everything needed for a clean installation: two rolls sized for drop bars, end plugs that actually stay put, and finishing tape to lock down the wrap at the stem. Ritchey includes extra length in each roll to accommodate different wrapping techniques and bar sizes, so you're not stretching the last few centimeters to reach the stem clamp on wider handlebars. The adhesive backing keeps the tape from unwinding during installation and prevents it from working loose over time as the wrap settles.
WCS Race tape works equally well as a performance upgrade or a maintenance replacement. The 3mm thickness adds minimal bulk to the bar diameter while providing meaningful vibration damping on chip-seal roads or rough pavement. If you've been running thinner tape and noticing hand fatigue on longer rides, this is the thickness range where most riders find the sweet spot between comfort and control.
