Description
Flared drops on a gravel handlebar accomplish two things that straight drops can't—they widen your hand position in the drops for stability on loose descents while keeping the hoods narrow enough for efficient climbing posture. The Ritchey WCS VentureMax takes this concept further than most gravel bars, building 24 degrees of flare into the drops along with 12 degrees of outward sweep at the ramps, creating a cockpit that opens up progressively as your hands move lower. This geometry gives you three distinct hand positions with meaningfully different widths, which matters when you're transitioning from pavement to doubletrack to technical singletrack within the same ride.
The bar clamp area maintains a standard 31.8mm diameter for compatibility with most modern stems, while the drops feature Ritchey's Ergo bend profile that provides a flat section for your palms when riding in the hooks. This flat spot distributes pressure across a larger surface area than round drops, reducing hand fatigue on long gravel events where you might spend hours in the drops to stay aero against headwinds or tucked on fast descents. The bend also positions brake levers at an angle that keeps your wrists neutral when braking from the drops, which becomes important when you're scrubbing speed repeatedly on loose gravel descents.
WCS-level construction means double-butted 7050 aluminum tubing that's been shot-peened for fatigue resistance and stress-relieved during manufacturing. The internal cable routing keeps housing protected from debris spray and simplifies cockpit aesthetics, with entry ports positioned at the bar tops where housing transitions naturally from frame routing. Ritchey machines a subtle texture into the Blatte finish option—a matte black treatment that reduces glare and provides additional grip security for bare hands or thin gloves.... Read More
